Giclee (jee-clay) is an advanced printmaking process for creating high quality fine art reproductions. Peale succumbed to the effects mercury and arsenic poisoning, brought on by his work as a taxidermist in his father's museum, in 1825. The result is wide acceptance of Giclee by galleries, museums, and private collectors. Artist: Raphaelle Peale Subject: Still Life Style: Traditional Product Type: Gallery-Wrapped Canvas Art This ready to hang, gallery-wrapped art piece features a cloth hanging on a clothes line. His style was influenced by Spanish still life paintings he saw on his travels to Mexico; most of Peale's paintings are small in scale, depicting a few objects arranged on a tabletop before a darkened background. Raphaelle Peale is considered the first professional American painter of still-life. Gallery wrap is a method of stretching an artist's canvas so that the canvas wraps around the sides and is secured a hidden, wooden frame. The attainable excellence that Giclee printmaking affords makes the reproduction virtually indistinguishable from the original piece. This method of stretching and preparing a canvas allows for a frameless presentation of the finished painting.
